In this lecture clip, Dr. Rebecca Bockow explains how orthodontists have a unique opportunity to support articulation and speech through early orthodontic expansion.
Dr. Rebecca Bockow is a dual-trained board-certified orthodontist and periodontist – one of only a handful in the country. She lectures nationally on periodontics, orthodontics, interdisciplinary orthodontics, airway, and skeletal growth and development.
"Now, what about function? So this young woman, she came to our practice at age four. Her mom said that people in her life were having a hard time understanding her. So she was in speech therapy, she was having a really hard time with articulation in part because she didn't know where to put her jaws.
“So you can see she bites to the right, she bites to the left, she bites in the center, and she didn't have room for her tongue. And so when we see a narrow maxilla, we start to see compensation patterns.
“So we as orthodontists have an opportunity. We can get the bones in the right place that's going to help support articulation and speech. It's not just airway. It's not just dentition. It's about speech. It's about growing and thriving.”
