Orthodontic Goals

In this latest lecture excerpt, Dr. Bockow examines the foundational goals that orthodontists aim to achieve in treating patients: harmony, beauty, and function.
Dr. Rebecca Bockow is a dual-trained board-certified orthodontist and periodontist – one of only a handful in the country. She lectures nationally on periodontics, orthodontics, interdisciplinary orthodontics, airway, and skeletal growth and development.
“We want to think about our goals. So we want harmony, beauty, function. And so before we talk about some of the malocclusions, let's all have a great definition of our goals.
“So we want to have even facial thirds in the vertical dimension, and we can see that from multiple views. We want to make sure that those, the jaws and the teeth, are approximately in the same parallel line as the most prominent part of the forehead, and the chin is also approximately in that same plane.
“We want to ensure that the arches are wide, that the teeth are centered in the bone, that we have nice intercuspation, teeth that are free from wear, and this in turn is going to almost always translate to nice airway health.
“So teeth, bones, periodontum. So we now are learning that grinding parafunction might be a sign of an airway issue. We want to think about the teeth and the bone that supports the teeth as the scaffold for the soft tissue and really thinking about harmony and, dental, and periodontal health.
“So balanced jaws, balanced teeth, balanced face, balanced occlusal relationships really gives us that oral facial harmony. “
