Early Orthodontic Evaluation Does Not Mean Early Braces
Parents sometimes hesitate to schedule an orthodontic evaluation for a younger child because they assume the appointment will lead directly to braces.
Usually, that is not what an early evaluation is about.
At Inspired Orthodontics, early evaluation gives us a chance to understand how your child's teeth, jaws, and bite are developing. Treatment may be recommended, but many children simply need to be monitored as they grow.
What Are We Looking For?
The permanent teeth begin developing long before you can see all of them in the mouth.
An orthodontic evaluation allows us to look at tooth eruption, available space, jaw development, and the relationship between the upper and lower jaws.
We may also identify developing concerns such as significant crowding, a narrow upper jaw, an impacted tooth, or a bite problem.
Knowing that a concern exists does not always mean we need to treat it immediately.
Sometimes Watching Is the Right Choice
Growth happens at different rates from one child to another.
By monitoring development over time, we can see whether a problem is changing and choose a treatment time based on what is actually happening rather than treating too soon.
When early treatment is appropriate, it may help create or preserve space for permanent teeth, guide eruption, address certain jaw or bite concerns, or reduce the chance that a developing problem becomes harder to manage later.
The Right Time Is Different for Every Child
There is no universal age when every orthodontic problem should be treated.
Early evaluation gives families information. It allows us to watch development, answer questions, and determine whether intervention would be useful.
If you have noticed crowding, unusual tooth eruption, or changes in your child's bite, you do not have to wait until every permanent tooth has arrived to schedule an orthodontic evaluation.
