Early orthodontic care can do more than straighten teeth. In this video, Dr. Rebecca Bockow explains how Phase One Orthodontics helps guide a child’s jaw growth, support healthy breathing and sleep, and create space for teeth to come in properly.
”Hi, my name is Dr. Rebecca Bockow at Inspired Orthodontics, and I'm here today to answer the question, what is phase one orthodontics? So when we think about orthodontic intervention, we think about treatment in the adult dentition. But then we also think about early growth guidance, early growth guidance, or phase one orthodontics is incredibly powerful because today we can take a growing child and we can slowly grow and develop their jaws both in the width and in the forward-back dimensions.
That helps with speech. It helps with breathing, it helps with sleep, and it helps make room for all the teeth. Sometimes we can avoid extractions, we can avoid impacted teeth, and we can hopefully help achieve a facial balance such that the lips can come together passively. That the tongue can fill the oral cavity, and that the teeth, as they emerge, emerge into healthy bone and gums.
Phase one orthodontics doesn't necessarily mean that your child won't need corrective orthodontic intervention down the road, but it certainly helps set us up for what we hope to be a lifetime of health as we do this intervention in young, growing children. It doesn't hurt. It's incredibly easy and predictable, and it's something that's a big part of our practice.
